The abandonment of Americana. A perspective.

For the past six and a half years I’ve traveled around the country looking for and photographing old windows;
I call it “window shopping”. As I stand there deciding whether to include a particular window in my collection,
I can’t help but wonder who the last owners were. What did they see, and what were they thinking when
looking out this window for the last time; before walking out the door.

Some are from businesses that closed long ago for various reasons, and some are windows from single family homes.
I see these windows as a portal to the human condition, and can almost feel the passing of American traditions
and spirits left behind by the people whose family histories, practices, and customs,
unwittingly had fallen into disuse in search of a better life.

One must look past first impressions as I have when considering these windows as ‘works of art’,
to see their inherent beauty created by years of existence, decay and visual degradation.
